The Altman Foundation
The Altman Foundation was established in 1913 under the will of Benjamin Altman, founder of the B. Altman & Co. department stores. It has become one of New York's leading private foundations, with strong programs in the areas of education, health, strengthening communities, and arts and culture. The Altman Foundation's goals are to "enrich the quality of life in the city, with a particular focus on initiatives that help individuals, families and communities benefit from the services and opportunities that will enable them to achieve their full potential."
The Foundation also has a particular interest in strengthening New York City's nonprofit sector, and that is why it became one of NPower NY's founding supporters in 2001. Since then, Altman has contributed generously to NPower NY's work and underwritten services for its other grantees. Unique NPower NY programs and services like the Technology Service Corps and IT Basic would have been difficult if not impossible to begin and sustain without the Altman Foundation's leadership
